While Beachgoers Ran From Attack, Widely-Shared Photo Depicts Lifeguard Running ‘Full Speed’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her personal space. On that particular weekend night, she, like many neighbors, noticed cracking sounds echoing through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the street, talking to a couple who had run up the incline soaked, she became aware of someone coming up at her rear. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was the only one moving in the path that everyone was trying to escape from, carrying that sizeable pack and without footwear … He moved at something that surely every part of you would tell you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage During Chaos

The image Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, noted that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics attending to many the injured.

Local Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to be shared by the local area, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the site of the incident transforming into a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including going into the ocean to rescue people in distress.

Following the tragedy, comments of appreciation were shared. One post conveyed gratitude for the lifeguards who showed that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of lifeguards issued a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful sentiments and support. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our personnel,” the team stated. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the hope that it aids those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many permanent lifeguards, remarked that the staff acted heroically from the moment the violence started until late that nighttime.

“People have shared so many emotional stories, but the widely-circulated image of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help assist the injured is remarkable,” commented a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic coastlines safe for the public, but what we witnessed on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the face of such darkness.”
