The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The deceased billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
