Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
