Champions League Matches Tonight: Chelsea v Barcelona & More

Greetings to a fresh night of electrifying European Cup soccer. Nine games are set for this evening, with three English teams in action. The Blues take on Barça in the key match of the night, while Newcastle visit Marseille and City host Leverkusen.

League Table

We're at the midway point of the group phase, meaning the standings is taking form. All six British clubs are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only two points separating fifth and sixteenth place, so there's a hint of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. It’s all up for grabs.

Historical Context

The only previous meeting involving Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semifinal of 2003-04, won by an rising superstar from Ivory Coast. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a notable history.

Initial Game Reports

Only a single goal during the opening period of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's sixth-minute strike has given Benfica under Mourinho a 1-0 lead at the Dutch side.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Even though The Magpies arrived in the south of France coming off their restorative 2-1 home English top-flight victory over City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Bilbao in the European Cup, their sole on the road win since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to discuss the mental side of this travel sickness. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the manager, whose team are sixth in the European table, with 9 pts from a possible twelve and automatic qualification to the last 16 almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can compare them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the MBM version of Diego Maradona is handling for that.
