‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic

Whenhe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in England, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in fall 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in the country, against the English side following that, he netted. His third outing, against Manchester City six weeks after that, well, he scored again. When he returned to the city to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, also. “In fact,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did their duty: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the attacker admits, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Man United, the usual talk. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the training ground, the city, the early training is about to start; after it, the short journey to Loiu and a further journey to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Uttering the name brings a smile to his face. This is proving a challenging campaign for the club, due in part to the requirements of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their past eight league games and lost against Arsenal and Dortmund in European competition. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and debuting in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he states.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and that proved true. Born to the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he experienced a torn cruciate, dropped, a demotion and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the first team but every phase you advance through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games with them and I suffered the ACL injury.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact repeatedly. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. He left in tears in that year, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in forty appearances. With Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, work, believe, and when eventually they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”

No wonder he says appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, at times, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
