The movie, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized version circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a tailor-made persona of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reframed as a Russian James Bond who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

A notable instance is a television show launched last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” the nation from chaos. Although he is called a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. He replies is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody actually pleaded with him to take the job. The position was in essence a casting call with many contenders. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the state in practice.

• Per an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the future president merely met the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.

Analysts concur that the image of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden fall apart under examination. In essence, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not involved with field operations.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “007” may in part have been inspired by the actor's debut as James Bond. The grittier version led local outlets and online audiences to make comparisons with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on city centers, fueling the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is hinted at through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
